Aberdare National Park

The Aberdare National Park is a protected area in the Aberdare Mountain Range in central Kenya located east of the East African Rift Valley. It covers the higher areas and the Aberdare Salient to the east. Aberdare National Park is best known as the site where in 1952, Elizabeth II became Queen after the death of her father King George VI, whilst staying at the Treetops Hotel. Aberdare National Park was established in 1950 with an aim to conserve and protect the Aberdare Mountains. Since then it has grown to a size of an area of 767 km2 (296 sq mi).

Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Sweetwaters)

From a working cattle ranch in colonial Kenya to a trailblazer of conservation innovation – the story of Ol Pejeta is as enchanting as it is inspirational.

Ol Pejeta also seeks to support the people living around its borders, to ensure wildlife conservation translates to better education, healthcare and infrastructure for the next generation of wildlife guardians.

Samburu National Reserve

One of the famous Safari destinations in East Africa, Samburu National Reserve is located in Northern Kenya and is a premier game reserve situated on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro river. This vast expanse of remote pristine wilderness measures 165 square kilometers in area and borders the Ewaso Ng’iro River to the south, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Samburu Reserve is a unique wildlife conservation haven famous for an abundance of rare species of animals such as the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx. The reserve is also home to a population of close to 900 Elephants. Large predators such as the Lion, Leopard and Cheetah are an important attraction (Kamunyak the famous Lioness that adapted a baby Oryx is a resident in the reserve). Samburu is infact one of the better locations in Kenya to spot Leopard. Wild dog sightings are also a common attraction to this unique protected area and Birdlife is abundant with over 450 recorded species.

Tour Plan

Day 1 Nairobi – Drive to Aberdare National Park (The Ark Lodge)
  • Depart Nairobi mid-morning (approx. 8:00 AM).
  • Drive through central Kenya’s scenic highlands to Aberdare National Park (approx. 3.5 hrs).
  • Lunch at Aberdare Country Club, the base hotel for The Ark.
  • Afternoon transfer by lodge vehicle to The Ark Lodge, located deep in the Aberdare forest.
  • Spend the evening watching wildlife from the lodge’s viewing decks overlooking a floodlit waterhole—elephants, buffalos, bushbucks, and sometimes leopards come to drink.

Day 2 Full Day at The Ark Lodge, Aberdares
  • Enjoy a peaceful day in the forest.

Day 3 Aberdares – Drive to Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Sweetwaters Serena Camp)
  • After breakfast, transfer back to Aberdare Country Club to rejoin your driver.
  • Drive to nearby Ol Pejeta Conservancy (approx. 2 hrs).
  • Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp in time for lunch.
  • Afternoon game drive in this private conservancy known for black rhinos, chimpanzees, and Big Five sightings.
  • Optional visit to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and rhino conservancy.

Day 4 Full Day in Ol Pejeta Conservancy
  • Morning and afternoon game drives in Ol Pejeta.
  • This conservancy offers one of the best chances to see rhinos in Kenya and features a wide variety of wildlife.
  • Optional activities: lion tracking, night game drive, or horseback safaris (additional cost).
  • Meals and overnight at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

Day 5 Ol Pejeta – Drive to Samburu National Reserve
  • After breakfast, drive north through Isiolo to Samburu National Reserve (approx. 3.5–4 hrs).
  • Arrive at Samburu Sopa Lodge, located in the rugged, arid region of northern Kenya.
  • Afternoon game drive in the reserve—famous for its special five: Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, and gerenuk.
  • Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 6 Full Day in Samburu National Reserve
  • Morning and afternoon game drives across the reserve.
  • Excellent sightings of lions, elephants, leopards, and the unique northern species.

Day 7 Samburu – Drive Back to Nairobi
